It’s been around a few months now, but this Google Earth plugin from Julian Cope and Holy McGrail’s Modern Antiquarian web site really is the ur-tool for the European megalith head. Load it up and you’ll see a continent literally swarming with standing stones, circles, rock art and other curiosities.
Just click on an item on the map and you’re taken straight through to its page on the TMA site. A favourite discovery for me was this, the “Devil’s Hoofprint” from Bishop’s Stortford: “The Devil’s Hoofprint is carved in clunch (a soft chalky rock) and located in the south porch of St Michael’s, Bishops Stortford… Like other churches dedicated to the warrior saint, St Michael’s is a hilltop church built on a pagan site. The church guide is coy about the carving and describes it as “possibly pagan”. Other views maintain that it is the result of someone sharpening their arrows in the porch!”
Hats off then to the MA crew, and thanks to Mr Leee Nite for the tip off!
